As a reader, I feel like I’m standing amid all the chaos and beauty in the story. But is it truly authentic as it is?

Is Where the Crawdads Sing a True Story?

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is not a true story, the best-selling work of fiction was published in 2018 and has since become a worldwide phenomenon. However, you can find several references to the author’s life in the novel, including her connection to a 1995 real-life murder.

Where the Crawdads Sing Controversy

Where the Crawdads Sing is the subject of some controversy because of its connection to a decades-old murder that took place in Africa. This is what we know about it so far:

  • In the late 1980s, conservation writer Delia Owens and her husband Mark Owens moved to Zambia to protect elephants. Mark joined an anti-poaching activist group, where he learned and trained how to shoot poachers.
  • In 1995, ABC’s Turning Point filmed the killing of a suspected poacher with a gun allegedly fired by Mark Owens. While elephants have been killed for their ivory tusks, many question whether it justifies the murder of human poachers.
  • Police believe that Mark Owens and his son may have hidden the victim’s body in a lake, as it was never found.
  • The victim, who was alone, may not have been a poacher.

So, is Where the Crawdads Sing based on a true story? Many believe that Where the Crawdads Sing is a fictionalized account of the events that took place in 1995 when the real-life murder happened. Delia Owens has since made millions off of this novel, still maintaining that it is only a work of fiction.

What is Where the Crawdads Sing About?

Where the Crawdads Sing tells the tale of Kya Clark – a young woman who grows up in the marsh of North Carolina.

As Kya learns more about nature and beauty in the marsh she calls home, she also learns that she is different than others around her. She lives with the heavy burden of never being able to fit into society due to her upbringing.

After spending her life isolated from everything except marsh critters, Kya’s life changes when she meets Tate Walker, a young man who lives in a nearby town. He teaches her how to read and write, and they fall in love. But when Tate goes to college, Kya is left behind once again.

The lonely life ends when she catches the eye of Chase Andrews. The date leads to a tryst between them. Yet, their romance is short-lived when Chase returns to his girlfriend and fiancé.

When Kya breaks things off, he is devastated and attacks her. After she narrowly escapes death, Kya returns home only to discover that Chase has been found dead – and that everyone thinks she may have something to do with it.

This book took me by surprise. I was in no way prepared to love it as much as I did. It has everything I love in a novel: a strong female character, romance, and mystery.

Where the Crawdads Sing is more than just a mystery. It’s a book about finding your place in the world. To become who you are and learning how to love yourself. It’s an inspiring and heartwrenching tale that made me well up with emotion on more than one occasion.

The setting of this book is absolutely beautiful; it takes place in a North Carolina marsh during the 1950s, with the marsh playing a major role in the character development of Kya.

While the plot is interesting and engaging, what makes this book special is how it was written. The writing is poetic and beautiful. The author paints a picture of nature in such vivid detail that you feel part of it.

I don’t want to give too much away about this book because I think it would ruin it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet. However, suppose you are looking for something different from than average YA novel. In that case, this book is worth checking out.
